The weather is warm and the days are long, which only means one thing: Summer is upon us! What better way to kick off the season than to celebrate International Picnic Day?
Born more than 250 years ago in Europe, this summertime tradition began as a fashionable potluck on friends' social calendars. While picnics have evolved from hunting feasts to grand Victorian soirées to Fourth of July parties, our love of good food and good company hasn't changed. As a mainstay of summer, here are a few tips to make the most of your al fresco dining adventures:
Location, Location, Location
The wonderful thing about picnics is their versatility! Head out to your favorite spot: The beach, a neighborhood park, or local museum grounds. Have your hands full with little ones, making picnic paraphernalia hard to tote? Set up at home in your yard. Weather less than ideal? Throw a blanket on the living room floor for an indoor picnic party. Picking your spot is all about ease and comfort.
Get Geared Up
What's a picnic without a picnic blanket? Whether checkered, flannel, or striped, a picnic blanket serves as the foundation for outdoor dining. Bonus: Find one with water-resistant backing to prevent dampness. Spread out, snack, lie on your back and watch the clouds roll by.
What's in Your Basket?
Eating outdoors can prove tricky, so give thought to the kinds of food you pack. Pasta and fruit salads, cheese and crackers, and sandwiches all travel well. Cookies, lemon bars, and brownies are all easy-to-pack treats for a little something sweet. Remember to pack any reusable plates, cups, napkins, and utensils you may need.
Don't forget to bring games to prolong the leisurely fun. A simple frisbee or ball for a game of toss are easy to pack, but provide hours of activity. Tuck a visual diary in your bag and sketch the landscape. Play nature bingo. Or relax with classic games like cards, pick-up sticks, dominoes, and checkers. Fun tip: Customize a tote bag with a checkerboard design so you can enjoy the game on the go!
